CheckMate Chess...

Ivan Hatvany, Director of CheckMate Chess (left in picture), is a FIDE-licensed chess developmental instructor, (FIDE are the World Chess Federation). Ivan has been a qualified teacher running school chess clubs for over 20 years. In 1999, whilst teaching Business Studies and Economics at Millfield School in Somerset, he was instrumental in launching the renowned Millfield Chess Academy, bringing in the services of top Grandmasters Nigel Short (below right) and Matthew Turner. Since its foundation the Academy has awarded numerous chess scholarships to develop the most gifted young chess players in the country.

In the last 17 years, since moving to Cheltenham, Ivan has developed chess clubs in a number of Gloucestershire schools. He also plays for the Edwardians chess team in the N. Glos Chess League. Ivan and his colleagues are fully CRB checked and ready to offer chess club support to primary schools across the county. Where budgets are a problem, equipment and initial training can be provided free of charge.

"Cheltenham College Junior School has been enormously encouraged by the manner in which the profile of Chess has been
raised since enlisting Ivan Hatvany’s expertise as an extremely proactive Chess Consultant. His Masterclasses for all ages and numbers have become a regular
feature of the school’s Chess programme".
